Crontab Schedule Generator & Humanizer
Construct, validate, and humanize POSIX 5-field cron schedules with real-time future execution run timestamps, syntactic AST breakdown, and deterministic local parser validation.
At every 15th minute past hour 2 on every day-of-week from Monday through Friday.
Field 1: Minute Range (0 - 59)
Set the exact minute or recurring stepped intervals of each matching hour.
Field 2: Hour Range (0 - 23, 24-Hour Military Time)
Specify operating hours. Single digits (0-23) or comma sequences (e.g. 9,12,18).
Field 3: Day of Month (1 - 31)
Calender date within the calendar month.
Field 4: Month of Year (1 - 12 / JAN - DEC)
Select specific months for seasonal or quarterly jobs.
Field 5: Day of Week (0 - 6, Sunday = 0)
Standard POSIX: 0 = Sunday, 1 = Monday, 6 = Saturday.

Why crontab behavior surprises even senior DevOps engineers: edge cases in IEEE Std 1003.1-2017, timezone daylight savings drift, and the classic OR-relationship between Day-of-Month and Day-of-Week.
POSIX 5-Field Standard vs 6-Field Extensions
Standard Unix Crontab (V7, BSD, System V, Linux Vixie-cron, and systemd cron) supports exactly 5 positional fields: minute hour dom month dow.
Non-standard implementations like Java Quartz Scheduler, AWS CloudWatch Events, and Spring Scheduler inject a leading seconds field or a trailing year field (6 or 7 tokens total). ToolAcre adheres deliberately to the pure 5-field POSIX contract to guarantee that generated definitions compile natively across Ubuntu, Debian, Alpine Linux, RedHat Enterprise Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS Darwin without syntax rejections.

The DOM & DOW OR-Condition (Union Logic)
In standard POSIX cron evaluation, all fields (minute, hour, month) are combined using a logical AND condition, with one critical historical exception: Field 3 (Day of Month) and Field 5 (Day of Week).
If both fields are specified (i.e., neither is an asterisk *), the scheduler triggers if either the day of month OR the day of week matches. For instance, 0 0 13 * 5 executes on Friday the 13th, but ALSO fires on every single Friday of the month AND on the 13th of every month.
| Scheduler Flavor | Total Fields | Seconds Precision | Special Chars | ToolAcre Support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| POSIX / Vixie Cron (ToolAcre) | 5 fields | No (Minute level) | * , - / | Native Compliant |
| Quartz / Spring Boot | 6 - 7 fields | Yes (Field 1) | ? L W # | Requires Extension |
| AWS CloudWatch / EventBridge | 6 fields | No (Includes Year) | ? * , - / L W | Exportable |
